A Mommy Makeover is Not Just for Mommies!
One of the things that I love about plastic surgery is that it’s constantly evolving. We are always looking for better, more efficient ways to safely deliver exceptional results. Downtime is a necessary component of any surgical procedure. So, anything that I can do to decrease my patients’ recovery time is a great thing.
Combination procedures are one of the most effective ways to maximize your results while also minimizing the surgery’s impact on your daily routine. A Mommy Makeover is by far the most popular combination procedure, but it isn’t just for mommies.
The Best Candidate for Mommy Makeover
A Mommy Makeover is mostly a marketing term for a combination of procedures that address both the breasts and the abdomen. Obviously, pregnancy and breastfeeding can result in breast volume loss and stretched out skin and/or muscles in these areas, but so can:
- weight gain/loss
- massive weight loss
- hormones
- menopause
- age
Therefore, anyone who is not loving the look of their breasts and tummy is a potential candidate for a Mommy Makeover. There are any number of procedures that can be combined to create the procedure. The right ones for you are always going to depend on your individual anatomy, desired outcome and willingness to tolerate scars.
Breast Augmentation or Breast Lift?
Rejuvenating the breasts is so popular for a reason — it makes women feel great. And when you feel more comfortable in your skin, it has a profoundly positive effect on your self-esteem. Rejuvenating the breasts is not always about a breast augmentation. Volume loss is a common side effect of pregnancy and weight loss, but, sometimes, the issues with the breast are more about sagging skin and tissue. Figuring out whether you need a breast augmentation (either with a breast implant or fat grafting to the breast) or a breast lift always requires an in-person exam. If curious at home, a good rule of thumb is that if your nipples face downwards, you are probably going to do best with a breast lift. Some women may even need a combination of the two.
Oftentimes, patients are wary of the breast lift because they fear scars on their breasts. In my experience, the incision lines tend to heal well. Furthermore, patients typically find that the more youthful, vital looking lift and projection that they achieve with a breast lift is well worth any minimal scarring.
Tummy Tuck
The most common procedure for improving the appearance of your abdomen is a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty. If you’ve had children or lost a significant amount of weight, you will likely require a full tummy tuck as it addresses the entirety of the abdomen. However, if you only have a slight bulge that rests solely below your belly button, then you may be a good candidate for the mini tummy tuck.
Patients love the idea of anything “mini” as it implies that there will be a smaller incision. This is sometimes true with the mini tummy tuck, but the most important thing is to choose the procedure that is going to lift, smooth and flatten your tummy. The Mommy Makeover is one of the most transformative procedures in all of plastic surgery, but only if it delivers on your unique goals.
