Popularity of Arm Lifts Soars High
Arm lifts to remove unsightly loose skin from the back of the arms have become much more popular since the turn of the 21st century. Brachioplasty is a great option for patients who have hanging skin caused by aging, genetics and major weight loss.
Since 2000, the number of brachioplasties in the U.S. has shot up an astounding 4,378 percent, according to statistics by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), with 15,000 patients selecting the procedure in 2012.
Why such a huge increase? The popularity of sleeveless tops and beautifully armed celebrities have been cited as factors. “I think we are always affected by the people that we see consistently, either on the big screen or on TV,” said Dr. David Reath, ASPS Public Education Committee Chair. “We see them and think, ‘Yeah, I’d like to look like that.'”
Women responding to a poll for ASPS said they covet the arms of first lady Michelle Obama, daytime TV host Kelly Ripa, and actresses Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Biel and Demi Moore.
“Women are paying more attention to their arms in general and are becoming more aware of options to treat this area,” ASPS President Gregory Evans said. “For some women, the arms have always been a troublesome area and, along with proper diet and exercise, liposuction can help refine them. Others may opt for a brachioplasty when there is a fair amount of loose skin present with minimal elasticity.”
Liposuction is often needed with the arm lift to create an optimal contour. Patients who don’t have a lot of excess skin but want to tighten and tone their upper arms might be able to achieve their desired look with liposuction alone.
